Luknow (AsiaNews/Agencies) Indian police this morning arrested eight people suspected of involvement in last Tuesday's attacks in Varanasi, the sacred Hindu city.
The three bomb blasts that went off in a temple and near the city's train station, killed 22 people and injured more than 70.
"Two men among those we apprehended closely resemble the identikits we have, as described by eye-witnesses," said Yashpal Singh, the local police chief.
The most credible witness, a shopkeeper who saw two men coming out of his shop leaving an unattended bag containing an unexploded bomb later defused should be called today itself to the prison in Uttar Pradesh to identify the men.
The arrests took place in a hotel in Hardoi, around 100km from the capital Lucknow, raided by police early in the morning.
An Islamic organisation Lashkar-e-Kahar has claimed responsibility for the attack; the group has thus been far unknown to the authorities, who have said they are "skeptical about the veracity of the claims". Investigations are rather leading to another group, Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is based in Pakistan and fights for the independence in Kashmir.
The latter group, from Pakistan, has declared it has nothing to do with the Lashkar-e-Kakar but it threatened New Delhi once again over its policy regarding the Indo-Pakistani border.
