Mumbai (AsiaNews) – Two years after ten Pakistani terrorists killed 166 people in an attack, India's financial capital Friday paid tribute to the victims of the carnage that stunned the world. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, state Home Minister R.R. Patil, other ministers, top police and civil officials laid wreaths at the victims’ memorial near the police headquarters in south Mumbai.
Using strong words, Union Home Affairs Chidambaram said Pakistan has the responsibility of bringing to justice the perpetrators of the attacks of 26 November.
“They promised us that they would provide voice samples of the persons whose names were handed over, but that has not been done so far. While we trust our neighbour, we must always be vigilant,” Chidambaram said. Moreover, “attention must be paid to police forces”, he said, or else there will not be efficient security.
In New Delhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pledged to redouble efforts to capture the perpetrators of the crime. “On this day of remembrance, we salute the courage, unity and the resolve of ordinary Mumbaikars and the brave and selfless action of our men in uniform during the attack,” he said.
Home Minister Chidambaram's direct attack follows External Affairs Minister SM Krishna's strong message, who called on Pakistan to dismantle its terror machine.
In a note verbale given to the Pakistan High Commission, India asked its neighbour to make “substantial and verifiable progress on bringing all the perpetrators and masterminds of the heinous attacks to justice”.
