Peshawar (AsiaNews/Agencies) - At least five people were killed in a suicide attack against a police check point in Peshawar, in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP). Among the wounded are 9 border guards and many children. The suicide bomber rammed his car into the security check point. According to police over 200 kgs of explosives were used in the attack leaving a huge crater.
The NWFP is an area on the border with Afghanistan and has been under threat from the Taleban who are battling against the Islamabad government.
According to local human rights organisations between January 2008 and March 2009 in NWFP, Balochistan, Punjiab, Sindh and Islamabad there have been over 1842 attacks with 1395 deaths. Rehman Malik, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior affairs, those involved in the suicide bombings are Pakistanis and they are playing with the lives of innocent people for the sake of a few pennies: “the price of a suicide bomber – he says - is from 0.5 million Rupees [4500 Euros] to Rupees 1.5 million”.
Many experts fear that the Taliban offensive in northern Pakistan has the potential to become a nationwide movement within a few months. Violence is already spreading and people are beginning to see the country threatened by an internal revolution.
