Colombo (AsiaNews) - "Whilst we observe certain positive signs of development in the country, the need is also felt to promote unity and reconciliation among the people in our motherland. This can only be done if we respect one another and safeguard each other's dignity," said the Catholic bishops of Sri Lanka in their Easter message.
Released today in Sinhala, Tamil and English, the statement is signed by Card Malcolm Ranjith (Archdiocese of Colombo) and Mgr Valance Mendis (Diocese of Chilaw), respectively president and secretary general of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Sri Lanka (CBCSL).
"The risen Lord appeared to his disciples," the bishops write, "and he honours them every time with the gift of peace. True peace is truly a gift and can be experienced united with God. Let us share the same gift of peace in our times in the aftermath of a war that ravaged the country."
For the prelates, this "largely depends on equality and justice granted to all citizens. May everyone experience the gift of peace in their private lives and in our dear country."
