Jakarta (AsiaNews) The bishops' conference of Indonesia (KWI) has a new president: Mgr Situmorang OFM. He was appointed during the bishops' annual assembly that was held from 1 to 16 November and he steps into the shoes of Cardinal Julius Darmaatmadja SJ archbishop of Jakarta whose second mandate has just come to a close after 10 years.
On the same occasion, the KWI chose a new secretary general. This post will be filled by Mgr Sutrisnoatmaka MSF, who succeeds the archbishop of Semarang, Mgr Ignatius Suharyo.
Mgr Situmorang who heads Padang diocese in North Sumatra is known for his commitment to encouraging peace and social justice, which he considers as "the result of hard work and not something to be taken for granted". He says: "Justice is the work of God and the efforts of our people."
Mgr Sutrisnoatmaka is bishop of Palangkaraya, central Kalimatan. For years, he was professor of theology at the University of Yogyakarta.
