Indonesia: 8.2 quake causes tsunami alert

Jakarta (AsiaNews/Agencies) – An 8.2 magnitude quake has been registered more 1300 kilometres (800 miles) north-west of Jakarta, Indonesia's capital.

A tsunami alert was issued following the quake, which shook the floor of the Indian Ocean at a depth of almost 30 kilometres for about three minutes.

Tsunami alerts were issued for other countries of the region, including Sri Lanka as news of the earthquake spread.

Its force was such that experts predict that any waves it generated could travel up to 1,000 kilometres 

The alert is set to last at least till 8 pm GMT when the waves will reach their crest.

The December 26 quake measured 9.3 on the Richter scale.
