Manila (AsiaNews) - "Cardinal Sin is in stable condition but is still being closely monitored by his doctors," Fr Rufino "Jun" Sescon, secretary to the Cardinal, said during a press briefing held this morning at the Cardinal's residence, Villa San Miguel.
"We still do not know how long he will be staying in the hospital. Right now he is on a respirator but a few minutes ago, the amount of oxygen needed was so minimal that probably later this afternoon the Cardinal may not need the respirator any more," Father Sescon said.
Cardinal Sin was brought to the Cardinal Santos Medical Center yesterday afternoon, after his doctors noted a drop in his blood pressure while undergoing his dialysis treatment. The Cardinal has been having dialysis treatment three to four times a week.
"A guest book for well wishers and prayers will be open at the Villa San Miguel," Father Sescon said. "The best expression of our love and concern for the Cardinal right now is through our prayers and sacrifices. We request the faithful to continue to pray for the well being of Cardinal Sin," he said. "Let us together ask the Blessed Mother, whom the Cardinal loves so much, to continue to intercede for him."
Meanwhile the Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Manila sent letters to the clergy, religious and other organizations and ministries which state that Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales is requesting the community to pray for the speedy recovery of the Cardinal. "The condition of His Eminence is now stable but visiting him is not advisable. He still needs much rest. Let us initiate prayer vigils for his health."
He said that the Cardinal was in high spirits prior to the "incident". His appetite was so good that he asked for a rice broth and vegetables.
Among those who rushed to the hospital yesterday were Bishop Socrates Villegas of Balanga, the Cardinal's former secretary, Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales, Bishop Francisco San Diego of Pasig and Bishop Gabriel Reyes of Antipolo. (SE)
