Manila (AsiaNews) – The Catholic Women’s League (CWL) has decided to “adopt” 2,200 seminarians because “We really need more priests since they are essential to the celebration of the Eucharist,” this according a decision taken by the CWL at its biannual convention in Manila.
CWL President Josephine S. Gaviola told AsiaNews that “we need new priests because they are essential to the life of the Church and for this reason we have decided to adopt 2,200 from both an economic and a spiritual point of view. If we do not help seminarians during their training, who will care for us?”
The League has a membership of 250,000 across the country. During the meeting the president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, Mgr Angel N. Lagdameo, urged CWL members to continue fulfilling their mission in the Filipino Church with fidelity and love, inspired to reflect on the challenge of the Gospel.
The government also praised the CWL. For President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo the organisation should be congratulated not only for its vision of promoting peace, justice, and righteousness in society, but also for it mission of helping the flock feel the love and presence of God in the charity works CWL members undertake for the poor and the needy.
