For Card Tagle, the pope's gesture is an example of humility, honesty and courage

In a message posted on the website of the Bishops' Conference, the archbishop of Manila expresses his sadness over Benedict XVI's resignation. The pope has always sought to promote the good of the Church. The prelate calls on Filipinos to pray for the Holy Father and for the cardinals charged with the election of a new pontiff.

Manila (AsiaNews) - For Card Luis Antonio Tagle, archbishop of Manila, Pope Benedict XVI's resignation "came as a surprise". It also "brought sadness" to the priests and faithful of the Filipino Church.

In a statement posted on the website of the Bishops' Conference of the Philippines, the prelate acknowledged that "We felt like children clinging to a father who bids them farewell. But sadness gives way to admiration for the Holy Father's humility, honesty, courage and sincerity."

"His paramount desire is to promote the greater good of the Church," the cardinal added. "We know that the Papal ministry is not an easy task. So we thank Pope Benedict XVI, who was elected Pope at the rather advanced age of 78, for selflessly guiding the Church these past eight years with his teaching, simplicity and gentleness."

For this reason, the prelate noted, all Filipino Catholics should pray for Benedict XVI, as he devotes himself in the coming years to the service of the Church through a life of prayer. Equally, the faithful should pray for the cardinals charged with the election of a new pope at the next conclave.

"In this Year of Faith, let us fix our eyes on Jesus the Good Shepherd. With Him and the Life-giving Spirit, we will journey towards the Father and the Kingdom of God with much hope and love."
