Bangkok (AsiaNews) A Tsuanmi alarm was sounded this morning in Thailand by the Natural Disaster Warning Centre. The director, Ploadprasob Surasawadee, said that from 9 to11 March, 2006 there were "unusual phenomena" about 500km off Ranong Province. "There were 31 tremors measuring between 4 and 5.3 on the Richter scale. There would be one of three reasons for this: a new underwater volcano, the eruption of a volcano called Baren or the eruption of another volcano. In the last case, the risk of a seaquake is very high."
Surasawadee warned Admiral Sathienrapan Kaeyanon, commander-in-chief of Thailand's Royal Navy, who put all his men on alert.
All fishermen were invited to give "timely" reports to the centre and Navy personnel about any suspect phenomena.
