Bangkok (AsiaNews/ Agencies) Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra announced his resignation on TV out of respect for the king who celebrates 60 years of reign this year.
Mr Thaksin said on national television that he would not accept the post of prime minister when the post-election parliament convenes.
"This year is an auspicious year for HM the King, whose 60th anniversary on the throne is just 60 days away," Thaksin said.
He said he wants to keep peace in the country.
Thaksin Shinawatra's decision was made after Sunday's elections did not end the political stalemate.
Before making such announcement the outgoing PM, harshly criticised by the opposition which accuses him of corruption and abuse of power, had an audience with King Adulyadej Bhumibol.
