Indian Protestant leader: In aftermath of Peshawar attack protect minorities

by Nirmala Carvalho
Sajan George , president of the Global Council of Indian Christians ( GCIC ) , writes a letter to the High Commissioner of Pakistan in India. The massacre of Christians in Peshawar is "a terrible tragedy " after which "promises and condemnation is no longer sufficient ."

Mumbai (AsiaNews) - Condemnation of a "barbaric and inhuman" and an appeal "to ask for protection for all minorities and places of worship in Pakistan". This is the contents of the letter sent by Sajan George , president of the Global Council of Indian Christians ( GCIC ) , to the High Commissioner of Pakistan in New Delhi Salman Bashir , regarding the suicide bombing of the Protestant Church of All Saints in Kohati Gate, Peshwar in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa .

"We are shocked and saddened - writes the Indian Christian leader - by the terrible tragedy of Peshawar , which killed nearly 100 people and injured more than 130 . All men , women and innocent children who left the church after Sunday ."

It is a great consolation, he says, " to know that the leaders of all religions and denominations have condemned the perpetrators of the attack, and that the local government has decided to strengthen security for minorities and their institutions . Nevertheless , the promises and condemnation is not enough. These terrorists do not seem to believe in God, nor in justice , even if they continue to say that their actions are to please God. Meanwhile , the Christian community continues to act as a decoy . "

"The historic building - concludes the president of the GCIC , referring to the targeted church - built in 1883, taking a cue from the mosques , is facing Mecca and is an iconic building in the search for peace, harmony and peaceful co-existence between the Muslim majority and the Christian minority . If the criminals who targeted it had any sense of decency and humanity they would have taken it as an example . "
