Pyongyang missile test fails

It was launched from the east coast of the country. The missile exploded seconds after launch. The South Korean military is still trying to confirm details. US: "We continue to closely monitor the actions of North Korea."

Pyongyang (AsiaNews) - A missile test carried out today by Pyongyang near Kalma, in Gangwon province (eastern coast of the country) has reportedly failed. This is according to military intelligence sources from South Korea and the United States which are engaged in joint training operations in the Korean peninsula.

"This morning, North Korea fired a missile from an area near the air base in Wonsan, but is presumed to have failed," said the Seoul government in a brief statement, adding that the head "did not release as it should have. "the South Korean military is still trying to confirm details about the failed tests, including the type of arm and if the missile exploded in mid-air or not.

Earlier this month, North Korea had successfully launched four ballistic missiles, three of which fell into the sea near the coast of Japan. On 19 March, Pyongyang also tested a new high-thrust engine type for its missiles. During a visit to Seoul last week, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned that all options are being considered.
