Trump in China from 31 March to 2 April. New 10% tariffs after Supreme Court ruling

Today's headlines: India, four arrests in Jharkhand for the murder of a woman accused of witchcraft, burned alive with her son. Deadly virus and bacterial infections have killed at least 72 tigers in Thailand. Chinese scientists have created an environmentally friendly water-based battery. US considers reopening embassy in Damascus after 14 years.

UNITED STATES - CHINA

Trump will travel to China from 31 March to 2 April 2026 for a highly anticipated meeting with Xi Jinping. The trip to China was announced shortly before the US Supreme Court overturned many of the tariffs on imported goods that the US president had imposed, including some against China. Trump immediately imposed a new global tariff of 10% to replace them.

INDIA

Four people have been arrested in Jharkhand on charges of burning alive a woman and her 10-month-old son, suspected of practising witchcraft. The woman's husband, who was also attacked, suffered severe burns and is in hospital. The police say they are looking for others involved. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, between 2000 and 2016, more than 2,500 people, mostly women, were killed in India on charges of witchcraft.

THAILAND

In recent weeks, a deadly virus and bacterial infection have killed at least 72 tigers at the private Tiger Kingdom zoo in northern Thailand. The Chiang Mai Provincial Livestock Office said tests had detected a highly contagious canine distemper virus - a highly viral infectious disease - and bacteria affecting the respiratory system.

CHINA

Chinese scientists have developed an long-lasting, environmentally friendly battery with organic electrodes and an electrolyte so safe that it can be used as brine for tofu. The water-based battery developed by the team is non-toxic and can be disposed of without posing any environmental risks, unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries. Water-based batteries eliminate the flammability risk of conventional batteries and can be more economical.

SYRIA - UNITED STATES

The Trump administration has informed Congress of its intention to proceed with plans to reopen the US embassy in Damascus, Syria, which was closed in 2012 during the country's civil war. A communication sent to congressional committees earlier this month informed lawmakers of the State Department's intention to “implement a phased approach to potentially resume embassy operations in Syria”.

RUSSIA

Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev told the Security Committee that in 2025, more than 72,000 foreign citizens who had committed crimes were deported from Russia, stating that the police could have identified many more offenders if they had had more financial resources, because ‘unfortunately, we also need money to maintain order’.

CHINA - KYRGYZSTAN - UZBEKISTAN - TAJIKISTAN

The first freight train carrying eight 40-foot containers set off on the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan-Tajikistan multimodal transport corridor, departing from Lanzhou station in China and arriving 18-20 days later at Dušanbe-2 station in Tajikistan, as announced by the press office of the Uzbek company Uztemirjul Container, one of the companies participating in the Utk International Logistics joint venture founded in China together with the Central Asian countries.
