Where there is the Risen One, there is freedom

by Gianni Criveller

AsiaNews’s editor-in-chief issues his Easter greetings, with a special look at the suffering of Myanmar and Hong Kong. “Death, sadness, and despair are not the defining words of human existence. We, heirs to the mission begun by Mary Magdalene, believe this with all our strength.”

Happy Easter, dear AsiaNews readers,

On Easter morning, a woman near an empty tomb is called by name by her Lord; she stops weeping and begins a new life and a new mission. Magdalene is resurrected with Jesus, announcing the news that Jesus’s resurrection opens a new season: Life is stronger than death.

Easter is the feast of life, joy and hope. Death, sadness, and despair are not the defining words of human existence. We, heirs to the mission begun by Mary Magdalene, believe this with all our strength.

I would like to extend this wish for life, joy and hope to all our sisters and brothers in Asia, especially to those who live an continuous Good Friday, like the peoples of Myanmar, as evinced by the testimony of Sister Regina which we posted on Holy Thursday, and the people of Hong Kong.

It is precisely to the friends of the city of Hong Kong, my mission, the mission of PIME since 1858, that my thoughts go, at this time.

Many friends, who share the ideals of freedom and the same Christian faith, fear the consequences of a specious application of the new national security law. Rather than defending everyone's security, such a law aims at silencing the voices of freedom.

Yesterday, we published Card Stephen Chow’s Easter message, who “in this difficult time” invokes the strength of hope, mutual accompaniment, the sharing of physical and spiritual resources, the conviction that peace and dialogue can pave “the way for eventual healing and recovery.”  These are precious and encouraging words, which we make our own.

Where there is the Spirit of the Risen Lord, there is freedom. This is the wish we address to everyone, to the peoples of Asia, to all who share our faith, to our sisters and brothers in humanity. Happy Easter.
