Yangon (AsiaNews) – Thousands of ethnic Chin have fled the city of Mindat after Myanmar’s junta launched an attack against the Chinland Defence Force (CDF), an armed self-defence group set up by ethnic Chin, which is aligned with the National Unity Government formed to resist the coup d'état.
The exodus is likely to drive even more people across the border with India, which has already taken in more than 15,000 refugees since the 1 February coup.
At least 10 people have been killed in Chin State in the past week. As of yesterday, Myanmar’s security forces have killed 805 people, this according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).
Although the military junta considers these figures questionable, the AAPP can document the killings with names and situations.
As of last night, the number of people held in the junta's prisons stood at 4,146, including activists, politicians, and many young people.
About 1,722 people have evaded arrest so far, 20 of whom have been sentenced to death.
