Jakarta (AsiaNews) – Over the past six months, Indonesia has witnessed an unprecedented turnover at the top of the country's major financial institutions.
Following the resignations in January of the top executives of the Indonesian Financial Services Authority and the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), the decision of Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo to leave his post before the end of his term was made public today.
These departures come at a delicate time for the country’s economy, marked by a weakening rupiah, capital outflows, and concerns over investor confidence.
The first turning point goes back to 30 January, when Mahendra Siregar stepped down as chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority.
In his resignation letter to President Prabowo Subianto, he explained that he had made this decision out of a sense of moral responsibility, to support efforts to restore confidence in the Indonesian financial system.
His resignation was followed, on the same day, by those of Vice Chairman Mirza Adityaswara, chief executive of Capital Markets, Financial Derivatives; Carbon Exchange Supervision Inarno Djajadi; and Deputy Commissioner of Bank Indonesia Aditya Jayaantara.
On 30 January, Iman Rachman, president director of the Jakarta Stock Exchange, also resigned, citing the need to strengthen the institution's governance.
Together, this has resulted in the most significant leadership shakeup in Indonesia's financial regulatory system.
The second phase of the transition is beginning now with the departure of the governor of the central bank. Perry Warjiyo submitted his resignation on Saturday, which was made public today, before his second five-year term was due to end in 2028.
After he joined the Bank of Indonesia in 1984, Warjiyo spent more than 40 years at the institution, serving in numerous strategic positions before becoming governor in 2018.
During his tenure, he steered the country's monetary policy through the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent turbulence in the international economy, aiming to preserve financial stability.
In recent months, however, the governor had come under political pressure due to the sharp depreciation of the rupiah. Some parliamentarians called for his resignation, accusing the central bank of failing to contain the devaluation of the national currency.
Warjiyo defended the bank's decisions, arguing that the currency would recover ground in the second half of the year, but at the end of July, the exchange rate remained near 17,969 rupiah per dollar, one of its weakest levels in recent years.
President Prabowo Subianto accepted the resignation in compliance with central bank regulations and appointed Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti as interim governor until a successor is designated.
Thanking Warjiyo for his nearly seven years of service, the head of state reiterated his confidence in the central bank. For its part, the latter said that there would be no interruption in the implementation of monetary policies.
The bank reiterated its commitment to defending the stability of the rupiah, ensuring the smooth functioning of the payments system, preserving the soundness of the financial system, and coordinating with the government to support sustained economic growth.
Markets reacted cautiously to the news.
In early trading following the announcement, the Jakarta Stock Exchange index lost nearly 1 per cent, while the rupiah weakened further, approaching the 18,000 rupiah per dollar mark.
Government bond yields also remained elevated, a sign of persistent investor caution.
Analysts, however, believe the reaction primarily reflects a short-term adjustment and not a systemic crisis.
The government's ability to appoint a credible governor, maintain a prudent monetary policy, and safeguard the central bank's independence will be crucial to rebuilding market confidence.
Observers also stress that, despite the risks associated with rising oil prices, uncertainties about the US Federal Reserve policy, and capital flight, Indonesia's macroeconomic fundamentals remain stable.
