Migrants

The Russian government has approved a quota of 279,000 permits for foreign workers for 2026. Last year, more than 90,000 highly skilled immigrants were employed. Asia is the main source of skilled workers in Russia; however, very few wish to settle in the country.

In Malaysia, where a harsh policy towards immigrants and asylum seekers prevails, an initiative backed by the UN Regional Office for Refugees aims to build bridges through food. In five short films posted on YouTube, public figures and migrants cook together, sharing stories and cultures.

Some 46 Thai migrants were killed when Hamas attacked on 7 October. Another 31 were abducted, with three dying in captivity in Gaza. In northern Israel, five were killed by Hezbollah rockets. Despite this, most chose to stay and continue to provide an essential service to Israeli agriculture.

The Home Affairs Ministry blames preventable or treatable diseases. Conditions have worsened since the latest wave of arrests. More than half of irregular migrants are Rohingya, as are the 500 who have gone missing at sea in recent weeks after their boats capsized.

The royal amnesty covers 1,971 prisoners, for whom Addis Ababa has begun repatriation procedures. They had been arrested for drug offences, with confessions often extracted by force or deception. Hundreds of migrants sentenced to death remain awaiting execution.

Following the entry into force of new EU regulations providing for facilities in third countries, Astana and Tashkent are being cited as possible locations. These proposals are linked to their proximity to Afghanistan and the availability of vast tracts of land. Brussels would offer visa facilitation in return. However, the two countries in question have denied the reports, partly due to domestic opposition.

Out of 107 recorded cases, 43, or about 40 per cent, involve parliament. This is the highest figure in the last 11 years, when the survey began. For the report, it is "a mirror held up to our society." Meanwhile, the arrest of a journalist is fuelling fears about freedom of the press and information.

Migrants from Bangladesh are the largest group of foreign workers, with more than 800,000 active work permit holders as of June this year, or 37 per cent of the total foreign workforce.

According to a report, at least 600 workers have been without a salary for months. Those who protested were arrested and detained, then released. The "actual number" of those who are not paid "could be significantly higher", expert said. A source: "We didn't know that calling for a strike was a crime. They accused us of trying to overthrow the state.”
