AsiaNews is a news agency promoted by the PIME missionaries, the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions.
It reports on Asia in all its aspects: from politics to economics, from the many faces of its millenary cultures to all that is new in its societies. And it has the ambition of looking at the whole continent, because Asia is not just Beijing or New Delhi, but a great mosaic of peoples and countries. AsiaNews gives particular attention to the theme of religious freedom - unfortunately still heavily denied in too many Asian countries - but also to the concrete life of the Christian communities of Asia and to the many seeds of hope sown daily by men and women of every religion in a great number of different contexts.
"Asia is our common task for the Third Millennium", wrote John Paul II more than twenty years ago. Every day we realise how much more prophetic these words become, in a world that is looking more and more towards the East.
From Hong Kong to the mountains of Thailand, from Myanmar to the existential peripheries of Tokyo, today there is a humanity that is speaking to us. Together with these peoples, on mission, we have rediscovered the liberating power of the Gospel of Jesus even where Christians are a small flock, often persecuted. And it is with them that we have understood that the world becomes irreparably poorer if it only runs after the rich and powerful.
This is what is behind AsiaNews. In a journey that began in 1986 with a paper agency directed by Father Piero Gheddo, an unforgettable pioneer of missionary journalism. Since 2003, then, with Father Bernardo Cervellera AsiaNews has become this website in four languages (Italian, English, Spanish and Chinese), which over the years has become a point of reference all over the world: every week we count readers in about 180 countries.
Since June 2021 AsiaNews is directed by Father Mario Ghezzi, missionary and president of the PIME Foundation.
The editorial coordination is entrusted to the Italian lay journalist Giorgio Bernardelli.
