GAZA - IRAN - ISRAEL
Netanyahu speaks of a “historic victory” against Iran, despite a US intelligence report claiming that American attacks have only delayed Tehran's nuclear programme by months. Iran and Israel agreed yesterday to a ceasefire, ending 12 days of mutual attacks after Trump intervened over the weekend with bunker-buster bombs. In Gaza, the daily carnage has not stopped near the aid distribution points of the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), described by UNRWA as a ‘death trap.’ According to Palestinian health sources, 870 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza during the days of war between Israel and Iran. Yesterday, seven Israeli soldiers were also killed in Khan Yunis when a bomb exploded as their vehicle was passing by.
MYANMAR
A Burmese woman has been arrested by the military junta for “spreading propaganda” and is being held for a Facebook post celebrating the 80th birthday of jailed democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. VIETNAM
Vietnam will abolish the death penalty for eight crimes starting next month, including embezzlement and activities aimed at overthrowing the government, parliament announced, sparing the life of Truong My Lan, a tycoon involved in a billion fraud. The National Assembly, the country's legislative body, unanimously ratified the amendment to the Penal Code to abolish capital punishment for these crimes.
CHINA
Flooding in south-western China, particularly in Guizhou province, has forced more than 80,000 people to flee their homes, while the collapse of a bridge has necessitated the rescue of a truck driver left hanging in mid-air.
China is facing a summer of extreme weather, with heat waves affecting large areas of the country, while heavy rains are battering other regions.
