Ship with Filipino sailors sunk by Houthis: 3 confirmed dead, 6 rescued

Today's news: Turkey and Pakistan strengthen their alliance in the energy and defence sectors. Chinese university students are leaving campuses due to excessive heat. The island of Bali is officially the second most crowded island in the world. A Thai man walked 30 km to pour fish sauce on a portrait of Hun Sen.

MIDDLE EAST

Six crew members of the Eternity C ship hit by the Houthis have so far been rescued, while the deaths of three others have been confirmed. The cargo ship was carrying 25 people, almost all from the Philippines, and was sunk by Yemen's Houthis because it was headed for Israel, according to a statement from the group. This is the second ship sunk in a week in the Red Sea.

TURKEY – PAKISTAN

The Turkish foreign and defence ministers have arrived in Islamabad to discuss military and energy cooperation with the Pakistani authorities. Officials in Ankara expressed solidarity with Pakistan after the clashes with India in early May. The two countries are considering cooperation in the mining, natural gas, oil and rare earth sectors, according to a statement released at the end of the meetings.

SOUTH KOREA

Former President Yoon Suk-yeol is in detention for the second time after a court issued a new arrest warrant. Although Yoon was removed from office after declaring martial law in December, prosecutors have recently requested new investigations into abuse of power and obstruction of official duties, and judges fear that the conservative leader may destroy evidence related to the case.

THAILAND – CAMBODIA

A Thai man walked barefoot for 30 km in about five hours just to pour fish sauce (called “nam plaa raa” and widely used in Thai cuisine) on a portrait of former Cambodian leader Hun Sen outside the embassy in Bangkok. The man was briefly detained and then released by the police. The incident follows tensions on the border between the two countries.

INDONESIA

Bali is, after Java, officially the second most crowded island in the world, and local residents are beginning to complain about the influx of tourists. With an area of 5,780 square kilometres and 4.2 million inhabitants, the island welcomes 60,000 visitors every day. Last year, the total number of foreigners was 6.3 million. Many Indonesians from other parts of the country are also moving there, causing prices to rise further.

CHINA

Due to the recent heatwave, Chinese university students have abandoned their campuses to seek refuge in air-conditioned places. At Qingdao University, a dormitory guard died of heatstroke, causing concern among students, who often find themselves living in small, overcrowded rooms. The sanfu season usually begins in mid-July, but this year it arrived early, with temperatures in the eastern region exceeding 40°C last week.

RUSSIA

In Crimea, shares in the seaports of Yalta and Evpatorija have been put up for sale to private buyers. The ports are in serious economic crisis due to the lack of tourist activity caused by the conflict with Ukraine. They have been closed to visitors and economic activity since 2014, along with those of Sevastopol, Kerch and Feodosia, and are also burdened by international sanctions.

KYRGYZSTAN - TAJIKISTAN

The President of Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Žaparov, visited Tashkent where he met with Tajikistan's Emomali Rakhmon, signing 13 bilateral documents to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries, most notably the Agreement on Confidence-Building Measures, which symbolises “a new stage in relations” after many years of tension.
