Adopt a christian from Mosul

For months now Pope Francis and the Iraqi Church have been imploring us not to "stand silently by" "or "look the other way" as our brothers and sisters are persecuted because of their faith.

The Pope is also asking Christians to "pray intensely" in an "effective participation" and sign of "tangible support" for all of them. This is why, some time ago, AsiaNews launched the campaign "Adopt a Christian from Mosul" which has allowed us to raise and send approximately 1.5 million Euros to support the daily needs of Iraqi refugees who fled Mosul under the threat of the Islamic State. Their needs continue to be enormous and their return home far from immediate. Because of this, the bishops are planning the transition from emergency plans that have been in place until now to a more stable relief program. This will entail the transfer of all the Christian refugees - about 130 thousand people, 21 thousand families - to houses, where they can restart their lives, get a job, think about their children's future. AsiaNews asks our readers and friends to continue to support our campaign "Adopt a Christian from Mosul" so we can help cover the costs of this project, which amounts to an estimated 3.5 million euro.

CHINA – VATICAN
Old guard and illegitimate bishops dominate the new Catholic Assembly

Elizabeth Li

Ma Yinglin and Fang Xingyao are re-elected presidents of the Bishops Council and the Patriotic Association, respectively. The principles of independence, autonomy, self-management and sinicisation are extolled. There is no "positive signal" as hoped by the Vatican.

CHINA - VATICAN
Assembly of Chinese Catholic Representatives extolls "independence and autonomy"

Bernardo Cervellera

59 bishops present at assembly, as well as the state administration for religious affairs director and members of the United Front. Future changes in the leadership of the Council of Bishops and the Patriotic Association. Extolling of autonomy (from the Holy See), a non-positive sign. The Global Times reiterates preconditions for dialogue. A state church. The criticism of Card. Joseph Zen and Hong Kong’s Justice and Peace. One Catholic: This assembly is a slap in the face to the Vatican.
