Russian Orthodox patriarch and Polish Catholics sign reconciliation message to evangelise the world
As the world's attention was focused on the Pussy Riot trial, an historic message was signed in Warsaw ending centuries of hatred, violence and prejudice. Kirill and Archbishop Michalik stress their common Christian roots and shared experience of persecution under atheist regimes in the 20th century. They also single out the challenges that are posed today by secularism (which marginalises religion) and abortion and euthanasia (which are equated to terrorism) as threats to civilisation. The family, defined as the unity between man and woman, is the sound foundation of society. The patriarch and the bishops' conference president exchange icons.

Relations between Moscow and Warsaw at risk over airplane crash near Katyn
The two countries are cooperating in the inquiry to determine the cause of the accident, but too many ghosts from the past haunt their relationship. President Medvedev has Katyń, a hitherto banned movie about a wartime massacre of Poles, shown on Russian TV. The Russian Orthodox Church expresses its solidarity. In the meantime, the two countries continue negotiations on energy cooperation.
Moscow Patriarchate thanks Catholics for support to Orthodox abroad
Metropolitan Hilarion, head of external relations, appreciates the support offered by other Christian communities: willingness to offer churches and assistance to the Orthodox abroad important. But if Uniates fail to renounce expansion, ecumenical dialogue will not be fruitful.

Bishops denounce moves against the credibility and unity of the Church
In a statement released to the press, Polish bishops stress the role played by the Church in the defence of “freedom and truth” during the Communist years. It demands respect for people’s dignity and calls on political leaders to ensure that secret service files be examined by an independent court.
