Many communities are still divided because of the Patriotic Association. Hebei underground communities change venue to avoid being arrested by police. In Shanghai, joy for the process of beatification of Paul Xu. But underground Catholics would like to also see Card. Gong Pinmei beatified. Yet in all the official and underground communities there will be dozens of baptisms.

Controls stepped up ahead of the change of leadership at the next Party Congress. A campaign to "convert" underground communities to the official Church and subject them to government policy. Arrests, "dialogue" and "study sessions".

Illicitly ordained, he was granted communion with the Holy See in 2008 with orders to obey Mgr. Jia Zhiguo. Who,, once again, is under detention and probably will not officiate at the funeral.
