ISLAM – MIDDLE EAST
Samir Khalil Samir
For Al-Baghdadi, Islam is a religion of war, a shrewd message according to Father Samir
The 'caliph' urges all Muslims to carry out their ‘hijrah’, emigration, to move from an Islam of peace to one of war, imitating Muhammad and his Hegira (in 622). The message rekindles something deeply embedded in the Islamic world and among traditionalists and Salafists. Islam is both peace and war and it is time for Muslims to reform their view of history. Islamic holy war and the Crusades are not comparable.
The desperate dream of the Islamic Caliphate
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s rhetoric is bankrupt. No Muslim wants to live in a caliphate. Moreover, no-one accepts him as "caliph". But he is correct in pointing out that the Islamic world is in decline, and Muslims themselves are responsible for this. Israel and "conspiracy” theories. The rebirth of Islam through open dialogue in society, based on universal and shared values. Otherwise the demise of Islam is likely.
01/04/2008 ISLAM – CHRISTIANITY
Christian and Muslims or how to live together with different dogmas
Is the Jesus of the Qur‘an that of the Gospels? Should Christians consider Muhammad a prophet? Some Saudi experts seem to think so and want to build dialogue on blackmail (a church in Saudi Arabia in exchange of a profession of faith about the prophet Muhammad). Christianity and Islam are however different and sometimes opposed to one another. Instead of syncretism or blackmail, the only path is that of mutual respect.
Islam walking a tightrope between violence and reform
The Islamic world is frontpage news. In places like Iran Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Lebanon a warlike Islam is facing off the West in increasingly harsh ways. In the West itself, Muslim communities grow in number as do conversions. But what might appear as a renaissance is in fact the sign of a profound crisis within the religion founded by the prophet Muhammad. Fr Samir Khalil Samir, a Jesuit and Islam scholar who teaches in Beirut, offers an across-the-board analysis of what ails contemporary Islam and the ways radical and progressive Muslims try to nurse it back to health. Here, exclusive for Asia news, is the first part of a series of article on the subject.
A fatwa against religious justifications for Islamic terrorism
A 600 page document by Prof. Tahir ul-Quadri, against violence, signals the beginning of a new season in the Islamic world. Like the pope in Regensburg, he says that God is reason and is against violence. Now a movement of people is needed to purify the disfigured face of Islam.
Women, equality and Islam: Rethinking the faith to meet the expectations of modern man
It is the only way to overcome the contrast between the verses of the Koran and sayings of the Sunna (tradition) of Prophet of Islam that sometimes do not point in the same direction. Some praise women or speak neutrally about them, others say they are temptresses and that hell is populated by women. Also, some verses speak of equality between men and women, some of inequality. Today the question is a juridical rather than cultural one.
