Ho Chi Minh City: The modern family shows the world the love of Christ

by JB Vu
Marriage catechism, youth sex education and dangers related to abortion are topics addressed in a seminar organised by Saint-Paul Parish. More than 500 people from across the country participated.

Ho Chi Minh City (AsiaNews) – Sex education for youth and couples, the dangers of abortion and the importance of Christian values in forming families were the topics discussed at a seminar organised by Saigon's Saint-Paul Parish last week. Titled "Sex Education for Parents and Children in Family" the event drew more than 500 people, mostly single.

"They are from different places in Ho Chi Minh City," Saint-Paul's parish priest told AsiaNews, "as well as various provinces of Vietnam and came here to study marriage catechism. As migrants living far from home they cannot go back their own parish but have a strong need to better understand the Bible. Through marriage catechism they seek orientation to live their spirituality," he added. "Some are volunteers; others are medical doctors, computer engineers, students, teachers."

"I came to prepare for my future family," said a young man attending the workshop. "I know that here I can learn how to manage it; I can learn the psychology of couples and that of my future children.

"I know that raising children requires work and money but I don't think they are enough," he added, "I believe that the love and care parents give their children are more important. Christian values are the best example of this truth."

"Many young people don't have clear ideas about sex education and many parents don't consider it something important to teach," Doctor Minh, a Catholic physician from Hong Bang Hospital, told AsiaNews. "Instead I believe that as difficult as it might be to explain, it is very necessary, especially in modern Vietnam."

Some participants discussed common law relationships and abortions. According to the doctor, "they don't understand that abortion has an impact on their reproductive health, that it can influence their psychology and their relationship to children."

But at least one young man now knows. "Knowing these things helped me," he said. "Now I think parents must trust and be faithful to one another and be close to their children. In today's world, the family means showing the world the love of Jesus Christ and demonstrating it to all through a missionary work".
