In memory of the victims of Tiananmen: the candle-light vigil in Hong Kong (Photos)

Hong Kong (AsiaNews) - From 8 pm tonight a candle-light vigil is ongoing in Hong Kong to remember the victims of Tiananmen. During the night between the 3rd and 4th June 1989 the Chinese army with guns and tanks chased away students and workers from Tiananmen Square, killing between 200 and 2 thousand people.

Since then, every year Hong Kong  people commemorate this massacre, gathering hundreds of thousands of participants. Hong Kong is the only place in China where people are free to remember the events of Tiananmen. For this reason, during these years, many young people and Chinese dissidents dare come to Hong Kong to participate in the vigil commemorating the "martyrs", and asking for democracy and freedom in China.

This year Catholics, before attending the vigil at Victoria Park, gathered for a prayer meeting, led by Msgr. Joseph Ha, auxiliary bishop of Hong Kong, responsible of the Justice and Peace diocesan commission.

You can find here live photos of the event (photos by Victoria Ma, Herman Yau and Mak Chung Wing).
