Islamic Al Azhar University suspends dialogue with Vatican
The decision was made this morning during a special meeting of researchers over "the recent unacceptable interference (of the Pope, ed), who sought protection for Coptic Christians." The Vatican spokesman: "The position of the Pontifical Council for interreligious dialogue remains an attitude of openness and willingness to dialogue. "

Francis in Egypt to strengthen Benedict XVI's "healthy secularism" in order to fight extremism
A recent conference in al-Azhar renewed the bases of the traditional relationship between the material and spiritual domains in Islam. Clearer bases are needed in the dialogue between Muslims and Christians. Benedict XVI’s teachings are important to understand the relationship between religion and politics and the difference between Christianity and the West.

Egypt, Al-Azhar reaffirms opposition to dialogue with Vatican
In a meeting with the papal nuncio, the Grand Imam El-Tayeb reiterates the accusations against the Vatican after the Pope's appeals for the safety of Christians. Pope in Egypt: Enthusiasm and admiration online and in press
Four significant moments marked the first day of Francis in Egypt. Admiration and appreciation for the courage shown by the pontiff: "Thank you for having risked your security for us." Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al Azhar, the said and the "unsaid"
There are many positive aspects in the meeting between the Pope and the supreme Sunni authority, along with silence on some issues. For Al Tayyib Islam has nothing to do with terrorism. But Isis uses the black flag of Muhammad, the prophet's sword, the sentences of the Koran. The terrorists take their bloodthirsty statements from many imams. The urgency of a new renaissance of Islam, reinterpreting tradition in modernity: a task interrupted by fundamentalism.

A Muslim writes to the pope: Dear Pope Francis . . .
He admires the charity shown by the pontiff towards Syrian Muslim refugees, and his push in favour of love and against hatred. Islamic scholars are not like this, he says, they do not denounce Daesh’s hatred and do nothing for Christians. He calls on the pontiff to press President to Sisi and Al Azhar to reform Islam. Without this Al Azhar risks being the academy of world fundamentalism. Here is the letter from our friend and collaborator Kamel Abderrahmani.
