Moon to Trump: Seoul will send a special envoy to Pyongyang

The first phone call between the two leaders since the resumption of inter-Korean dialogue. The two countries reaffirm their commitment to peace, but the White House does not comment on the sending of a representative.

Seoul (AsiaNews / Agencies) - South Korean President Moon Jae-in will send a special envoy to North Korea. This was reported to his American counterpart, President Donald Trump, during the first phone call between the two leaders sincethe beginning of the inter-Korean dialogue. Trump and Moon spoke for 30 minutes, at 10 o'clock last night, Seoul time.

The two Koreas returned to the negotiating table last January, in the context of the PyeongChang Olympics. At present, Seoul is pushing Pyongyang and Washington towards dialogue, to which the different positions of the two countries are interposed on the necessary preconditions: the US demands North Korea renounce its nuclear weapons program, which it refuses.

"The two leaders agreed to continue their efforts to maintain the momentum for South-North dialogue so it may lead to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," reports the South Korean presidential office. However, no news was given regarding President Trump’s reaction to the decision to send a representative, and the White House has also remained silent on the issue.

For his part, Moon insists that if North Korea-US dialogue resumes, the rapprochement of the two Koreas could also favor the resumption of the six-party negotiations between the two Koreas, the United States, Japan, China and Russia, stalled since 2008.
