Pabna, another Hindu hacked to death (Video)

His name is Nityaranjan Pandey and he was 60 years old. For more than 40 years he had worked as a volunteer in an ashram in Pabna. Friends describe him as a simple man with no enemies. He was shot in the back while doing his morning walk. A long trail of blood is terrorizing the country.

Dhaka (AsiaNews / Agency) - Another attack against a member of the minorities in Bangladesh took place this morning in Pabna (center-west of the country), when some assailants hacked a man to death.  He worked as a volunteer at a Hindu ashram in Pabna. He name is Nityaranjan Pandey, 60, and for more than 40 years he had served at the Sri Sri Thagore Anukul Chandra Sathsango Monastery.

The killing took place in the early hours of this morning and no witness were present on the site of the murder. The lifeless body of Pandey was found in front of the City Mental Hospital. According to the investigators' reports, the man was attacked from behind by criminals who in all likelihood were waiting hidden behind the hospital's entrance gate.

The wounds to the neck and head were fatal, so that doctors could do nothing to save him.

Abdullah Al-Hasan, a local police officer reported that the man was shot while doing his morning walk, meaning that the attackers knew his habits. Jugol Kishore Ghosh, the general secretary of the ashram, confirms that every morning Pandey "went on a long walk because he had diabetes". Naresh Madhu, a local NGO official, said: "He was a simple man, he had no enemies”.

This violent incident is just the latest of a long series of attacks that is bloodying the country. In all likelihood, the hand of Islamic extremists is also behind this murder, but investigators will neither confirm nor deny this.

Only a few days ago another Hindu, the priest of the temple Noldanga, was slain in the place of worship. Before him, a few hours away from each other, on June 5 a Christian businessman in Bonpara and the wife of a famous police inspector involved in the fight against Islamic terrorism were murdered. Since last year, there have been about 40 victims, including students, professors, bloggers and activists in the LGBT community.
