Pope: "In God, justice is mercy, and mercy is justice"

Do not give in to the "logic of casuistry" that reduces the faith in terms of "can" or "cannot", but follow the path of Jesus, "the path from case study to truth and mercy". Jesus says, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her", but he spoke "many times with an adulteress." And in the end he said: "I do not condemn you. Sin no more. "

Vatican City (AsiaNews) - "In God, justice is mercy, and mercy is justice”, said Pope Francis explaining the refusal of the " logic of casuistry ", that reduces the faith in terms of "can" or "cannot" in favor of the truth. In his homily at Mass celebrated this morning in Santa Marta, Francis was inspired by the question in today's Gospel of Mark the teachers of the Law pose to Jesus: "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?".

The doctors of the Law, who follow Jesus during his preaching in Judea, ask him the question to put him again "to the test," said Francis. "Jesus - he continued - does not answer whether it is lawful or not lawful; He does not fit into their logic of casuistry. Because they thought only of faith in terms of 'can' or 'cannot', from where you can, to where you cannot. The logic of casuistry: Jesus does not enter into this. He addresses the question: 'But what did Moses command you? What is in your law? '. And they explain that gave Moses permission to divorce one’s wife, and they are the ones to fall into the trap,. Because Jesus terms them as “hard hearted”': 'For your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment', and tells the truth. No casuistry. Without license. The truth".

"Jesus always speaks the truth," "he explains how things were created": the truth of the Scriptures, the Law of Moses. And he does so even when his disciples question him on adultery, he repeats: "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, and if she divorces her husband and marries another He commits adultery. " But if the truth is this, and adultery is "severe", how then do we explain when Jesus spoke "many times with an adulteress", "a pagan"? he "drank from her glass, which was not purified?". And in the end he said: "I do not condemn you. Sin no more "? How is it possible?.

"This is the way of Jesus - it is quite clear – it is the path from casuistry to truth and mercy. Jesus leaves aside the logic of casuistry. To those who wanted to test him, to those who thought of this logic of ‘it is possible’, he termed them - not here, but in another passage of the Gospel - hypocrites. Even with the fourth commandment, they denied assistance to their relatives with the excuse that they had given a good offer to the Church. Hypocrites. The casuistry is hypocritical. It is a form of hypocrisy. ‘You can - you cannot' ... which then becomes more subtle, more evil: I? I can up to this point but from here to here, I cannot. This is the deception of casuistry ".

To which Francis opposes the logic of truth, which is accompanied by the example of Jesus, mercy, "because He is the embodiment of Mercy of the Father, and cannot deny himself. He cannot deny himself because he is the Truth of the Father, and cannot deny himself because he is the Father of Mercy. " "This is the way that Jesus taught us", difficult to apply before the temptations of life.

"When temptation touches your heart, the way to get out of casuistry to truth and mercy, it is not easy: it takes the grace of God to help us to go on. And we always have to ask for it. 'Lord, Make me just, but just with mercy'. Not just covered by casuistry. Justice in mercy. As you are. Justice in mercy. Then, those of a casuistic mindset can ask: 'But, what is more important, in God? Justice or mercy? '. Also, it's a sick thought, trying to get out ... What is more important? Not two things but one : in God, justice is mercy, and mercy is justice. May the Lord help us to understand this road, which is not easy, but it will make us happy, and it will make so many people happy. "
