Pope: Jesus’ ‘logic’ is to take responsibility for others, not to turn away

"With the convergent commitment of all political and economic leaders, the labour market can be relaunched: without work, families and society cannot move forward. Let us pray for this, because it is and will be a post-pandemic problem”.

Vatican City (AsiaNews) - Sharing and solidarity. On the day when the Gospel narrates the multiplication of the loaves, Pope Francis expressed his wish at the Angelus that "with the convergent commitment of all political and economic leaders, the labour market can be relaunched: without work, families and society cannot move forward. Let us pray for this, because it is and will be a post-pandemic problem”.

Before the recitation of the Marian prayer, speaking to a few thousand people present in St. Peter's square, Francis stressed that by saying to the apostles to feed the crowd “Jesus knows what he is going to do, but wants to change their attitude: not to say 'that they can cope', but 'what does Providence offer us to share?'. Two contrary attitudes and Jesus wants to bring them to the second attitude".

“Through this situation, Jesus wants to educate his friends of yesterday and today to the logic of God. And what is the logic of God that we see here? The logic of taking charge of the other. The logic of not washing your hands, the logic of not turning away. No. The logic of taking responsibility for the other. What they 'do' does not enter the Christian vocabulary. As soon as one of the Twelve says, with realism: "Here we have nothing but five loaves and two fish!", Jesus replies: "Bring them to me here" (vv. 17-18). He takes that food in his hands, closes his eyes, recites the blessing and begins to break and give the portions to the disciples to distribute. And those loaves and fish do not end, they are enough and they advance for thousands of people ".

"Sometimes - the Pope said - spirit and matter are opposed, but in reality spiritualism, like materialism, is foreign to the Bible. It is not a language of the Bible. Jesus taught us to ask for daily bread every day: there is no contrast between the bread needed to live and the bread that is the Eucharist. Indeed, the contrast arises if we approach the Sacrament forgetting our brothers and sisters who are deprived of the necessary. The compassion, the tenderness that Jesus showed towards the crowds is not sentimentalism, but the concrete manifestation of love that takes care of people's needs. We are called to approach the Eucharistic table with these same attitudes of Jesus: compassion for the needs of others, trust in the provident love of the Father and courageous sharing ".

“Compassion is not a purely material feeling, it is sharing: com-passion. Today it will do us all good to think: when I read news of wars, of hunger, do I have compassion? ”.

“May Mary Most Holy help us to follow the path that the Lord shows us in today's Gospel. It is the path of fraternity, which is essential to face the poverty and suffering of this world, and which projects us beyond the world itself, because it is a path that starts from God and returns to God ".

After the Angelus recitation, Francis first expressed "closeness" to the people of Nicaragua for the attack on the crucifix of the "Blood of Christ" in the cathedral of Managua.

Before greeting those present, he recalled that "since yesterday and until midnight today the "The pardon of Assisi "is taking place, the spiritual gift that St. Francis obtained from God through the intercession of the Virgin Mary. It is a plenary indulgence that can be received by approaching the Sacraments of Confession and the Eucharist and visiting a parish or Franciscan church, reciting the Creed, our Father and praying for the Pope and his intentions. This indulgence can also be extended to a deceased person. How important it is to put the forgiveness of God, who 'generates heaven' in us and around us, at the center! ".
