Pope: The Year of Faith in the footsteps of John Paul II and Paul VI
The apostolic letter that explains rationale, objectives and guidelines of the Year of Faith is ready, and will be published in the coming days, after nearly 50 years since the Second Vatican Council. As for the Polish pope, the new evangelization and mission ad gentes go together, and are "aspects of the mission of the Church." Paul VI proclaimed a "Year of Faith" in 1967.
Pope announces a "Year of Faith" for the New Evangelization and mission ad gentes
The Year of Faith "will begin on 11 October 2012, the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, and will end November 24, 2013, Solemnity of Christ the King." Benedict XVI will prepare a special apostolic letter to explain its value to "strengthen our faith in Him and to proclaim Him with joy to the people of our time." New evangelization and mission ad gentes are in harmony. Some avenues to take: a theology of history, "after the disastrous season of totalitarian empires of the twentieth century"; the "power of the Spirit"; not exclusively reducing the Church's commitment to the political sphere.
Pope: Jesus Christ, the starting and finishing point of evangelization
Benedict XVI presides over the Eucharist which opens the Synod on the new evangelization. Dedicated especially to those who have drifted from the Church. But completes and renders fruitful the mission ad gentes. Christian marriage "subject" of the new evangelization, in front of the "painful reality of many marriages that unfortunately end badly." The priest John of Avila - missionary and preacher - and the Benedictine Hildegard of Bingen - musician, writer, scientist, mystic - proclaimed Doctors of the Church Universal. For the success of the Synod the intercession of Blessed John Paul II sought, "an example of the new evangelization." The real program of the Synod Assembly is conversion and reconciliation "with God and neighbor." Praying the Rosary in the family and in the community for the Year of Faith.
In the Year of Faith a pilgrimage to reaffirm the value of the family
Statistics show that the family remains in first place among the desires of young people, in spite of a "race to individualism" and strong cultural opposition. Boundaries cannot be removed by assimilating marriage and the family into any form of affection. Nor is loving each other enough to justify marriage.
Pope: Lent, greatest work of charity is proclaiming the Good News
In this Year of Faith, Benedict XVI’s Lenten message is dedicated to '"the indissoluble interrelation" between faith and charity. "Faith is a gift and response, it helps us know the truth of Christ as the incarnate and crucified Love, full and perfect obedience to the Father's will and God's infinite mercy towards others", "charity helps us enter into the love of God manifest in Christ, and joins us in a personal and existential way to the total and unconditional self-giving of Jesus to the Father and to his brothers and sisters. "
Pope: World Mission Day to proclaim the Gospel to those who do not know
Benedict XVI recalls the missionaries who suffer persecution, especially Don Ruggero Ruvoletto, killed in Brazil, and Fr. Michael Sinnot, kidnapped in the Philippines. All must share "materially and spiritually" with the needs of the young poorer Churches. Prayers for the African Synod, currently underway.
