Russian media: Black boxes "useless" in A321 Sinai disaster investigations

by Nina Achmatova
The Kommersant newspaper quotes sources close to the investigation who have opened the first black box, without finding significant elements: everything was normal for the first 20 minutes of flight, then the blackout of all flight parameters which confirms the hypothesis of a sudden and devastating event. After Cameron also Obama: "There is the possibility that there was a bomb on board".

Moscow (AsiaNews) - While the most serious crash in Russian and Soviet history is also becoming a diplomatic incident - with Moscow accusing the US and Britain of rushed judgements on the causes of the A321crash in Sinai – on the ground investigations are proceeding slowly, with black boxes that could prove useless in clarifying the dynamics of the incident.

According to sources in the Russian newspaper Kommersant, the in flight recorder – which located and opened on November 5 by the authorities, without any further details being given - showed that the first 20 minutes of flight-time all Airbus systems functioned properly. Sources reveal that suddenly there was an event, after which the recording of all flight parameters was simultaneously interrupted. The explanation may be in a mid-air detachment of the fuselage, which led to the breakdown of all cables and sensors that feed data to the black box.

According to the newspaper, the decoding of the second onboard recorder will not shed any more light on the incident either.  This black box records cockpit conversations and was heavily damaged in the crash. The fact that the Russian authorities have already stated that it will take some months to reach any conclusions regarding the air disaster has been translated by Kommersant to mean that the black boxes have already proved useless in investigations.

What has been confirmed is that in any event the pilots had no time to launch a distress call before the crash; which reinforces the hypothesis of a sudden event, excluding human error and undermining the hypothesis of a technical or structural failure.

Both London and Washington are insisting that it was an attack and have already taken precautionary measures. "I think it is possible there was a bomb on board the plane that crashed in the Sinai and we are considering this seriously," said US President Barack Obama in an interview.

He echoes the statements of British Prime Minister, David Cameron, who believes there was a mid-flight explosion "likely" caused by a bomb. The BBC reveals that investigators in London believe a bomb was placed on the flight before takeoff.

The reconstruction is based on intelligence interceptions between IS members. Britain has suspended flights to and from Sharm el-Sheikh, where on October 31 the Russian Metrojet Airbus left, carrying 224 people, all of whom were killed. The Foreign Ministry in Moscow, while recognizing the legitimacy of London’s move, described the idea that Britain is in possession of information about what happened, but has not delivered it to the international group of investigators working on case as "shocking".
