Sri Lanka: Sisters of the Good Shepherd celebrate Christmas with the poorest children
In the villages of Wewala, Weligampitiya and Kalaeliya near Jael, the nuns gave birth to a free afternoon school for poor and sick children. On 22 December they celebrated Christmas with gift to all 52 of them school uniforms and books.

Sri Lankan Catholics and Anglicans to mark 2018 as the Year of the Good Shepherd and the Year of Youth
The ceremonies took place on Saturday and Sunday. The Catholics also brought to a close the Year dedicated to Saint Joseph Vaz. During the Anglican ceremony, Rev Priyantha Wijegoonewardene took office as the new general secretary of the Ceylon Bible Society.

Thanks to the work of the Missionaries of Charity, the Siamese twins Trishna and Krishna were operated on in a specialized centre in Australia. A Muslim woman prays to give birth to a female. Hindu faithful: it is the only place where they help you without asking anything in return.

During Lent, practical help for the poor from the Church
For years, the dioceses of the country have been gathering funds during Lent for scholarships, aid for the poor, reconstruction of houses, and medical assistance. The directors recount the initiatives already in place, and the plans for 2008.

The children live in a multiethnic area of the capital that developed after 1971 for many of the city’s beggars. Children performed in a Christmas play to tell parents to stay clear of alcohol abuse.

Vietnamese Catholics serving the poor and children at Christmas
About 9.79 per cent of the country’s population lives in poverty, 5.27 per cent are at risk. About 1.5 million children live in difficult situations. Various social and charitable groups are undertaking a number of initiatives for the upcoming holidays. About three thousand children are expected at the Christmas Festival organised by Caritas Saigon. The diocese of Hanoi and the Goethe Institute are working together to raise funds.
