China registers only 39 new infections, from people returning from abroad. The number of deaths in Italy has risen to 3405, surpassing those of China. In Madrid, one person dies "every 16 minutes". Globally, infections exceede 240 thousand cases; over 10 thousand dead.
Beijing (AsiaNews) - There have been no new cases of local infection in China for the second consecutive day, not even in the province of Hubei, the epicenter of the pandemic.
The data released by the National Health Commission show that yesterday there were 39 new infections, but all from people from abroad. Among them, 14 were registered in Guangdong; eight in Shanghai, six in Beijing. The total number of infected "from abroad" therefore rose to 228. The total number of infected is 81,300. Three people died yesterday, two of them in Hubei, bringing the death toll to 3248.
Yesterday, the number of deaths in Italy rose to 3405, surpassing those of China and confirming itself as the nation with the greatest number of coronavirus deaths. As previously stated by the World Health Organization, Europe has become the new epicenter of the pandemic.
To deal with the crisis, Italy asked for help from China and doctors from all over the world, especially from Cuba. A team of Chinese doctors who recently visited Lombardy, the Italian region most affected by the coronavirus, described the self-isolation that is imposed on the inhabitants as "negligent".
The reasons for the growing number of coronavirus deaths includes the high percentage of elderly people living in Italy (30% are over 60 years old). According to experts, the elderly are most vulnerable to Covid-19.
Italy is also the second country in the world, after China, for infections, with 41035 cases. Spain also faces a consistent growth of cases: 17147 infections, an increase of 25% in one day, with 833 deaths. A local authority said that one person dies in Madrid "every 16 minutes".
