YouTube videos to address the problems of teenagers

The Association of Prefects of the Holy Family Convent is behind the initiative. The goal is to guide young people using the tools they use the most: social media. The videos will address various issues, like teen pregnancies, drug addiction and the role of parents.

Colombo (AsiaNews) – The Association of Prefects of the Holy Family Convent is marking its 25th anniversary with a project to address and perhaps solve the problems of Sri Lankan teenagers through videos uploaded on YouTube and other social media.

The initiative began at the end of September with a pilot video, to be followed by other videos on 12 current issues, such as teen pregnancies, drug addiction, and cyber-bullying.

This is part of the association’s ‘02 for Teen Soul’ production, which was presented at the Holy Family Convent School in Kalutara, Archdiocese of Colombo, in the presence of officials from 20 schools.

According to the chief prefect, "a good school is not just a place where you learn various subjects and pass exams. It is also a place where we acquire broader knowledge about life and our culture."

The YouTube production stems from a series of workshops and seminars that highlighted the need to reach out to young people using the tools that young people use the most, i.e. social media. "There is not one [youth] who does not use social media," he said.

Other school officials noted that young people, 11 to 21, "are the most vulnerable to new technologies, and can often adopt wrong attitudes and habits, because they cannot select and or choose between what is right or what is wrong."

"We are confident that the videos on YouTube will help and guide young people. They deal with important issues such as love, friendship and the role of parents."
