Buddhist Supreme Patriarch tells Muslims and Hindus that living peacefully together is the goal of every religion’s teachings

Taan Chao Khun Phra Somdej Ariyawongsagatanana met the representative of the advisor to the king on Islamic affairs and the head of the Hindu community. Teaching religion is key to peaceful coexistence between the communities. “In Thailand, everyone is free to profess their religion and there is no difference among the believers."

Bangkok (AsiaNews) – The Buddhist Supreme Patriarch Taan Chao Khun Phra Somdej Ariyawongsagatanana said "to live in peace together is the primary teaching goal of every religion."

The patriarch spoke after receiving a message on Wednesday from Prasarn Sricharoen, representative from the advisor to the King on Islamic Affairs, who said that "if each of us practices the teaching of our own faith, we shall live happily together. In Thailand, everyone is free to profess their religion and there is no difference among believers."

The reference to living together in peace is especially urgent given the conflict in the south of the country, where attacks and clashes between Islamic groups and police continue.

The patriarch reminded Buddhists who came for the blessing that "the readiness (or willingness) of all people living in the same community gives rise to national prosperity. So be united as one, improving yourselves and others. May the three gems (the Buddha, the Dharma, and the teachings of the sangha, the community of Buddhist monks) ensure each of you your wishes."

In an audience with the Supreme Patriarch, Maha Rachakrupiteesrivisuthikhun, chief Brahmin offered water poured from a conch shell. According to the Brahman, holy water in a shell is a good omen and a sign of respect for the patriarch.

Taan Chao Khun Phra Somdej Ariyawongsagatanana recently met the Card Francis Xavier Kriengsak Kovidhavanij, archbishop of Bangkok.
