China hit by Rammasun, the strongest typhoon in 40 years

At least one victim and hundreds of thousands of people forced to leave their homes in the southern part of the country. The authorities issue red alert and call for the help of the army. In the Philippines, the storm caused more than 40 victims.

Guangzhou (AsiaNews / Agencies) - The super-typhoon Rammasun, the most powerful to hit the coast of China in the last 40 years has made landfall in southern China: initial estimates speak of 1 dead, hundreds of thousands of people fleeing and hundreds of canceled flights. But state media warn that given its power more damage is forecast. Rammasun arrived from the Philippines, where it claimed more than 40 lives.

The storm is moving at at a speed of 20-25 kilometers per hour, with winds of up to 180 km per hour: local authorities have declared a red alert for the first time this year, the maximum warning , and requested the help of the army. Over 60 thousand people have been evacuated in land, while more than 217 thousand people have fled coastal areas.

Rammasun left millions of people without power in the Philippines' capital Manila and is now repeating the same phenomenon in China: the wind, a resident of Haikou writes, "is so strong that it's like being on a plane." Even the torrential rains that preceded it have caused widespread damage: at least six people died from being struck by lightning, while nine others were killed by a landslide in the southern province of Yunnan.
