Doctors worried about Liu Xia: 'Stop treatment prescribed in China'

The friend and dissident Liao Yiwu reports latest news. Unlikely that she will not be present at the ceremony in memory of her husband, the Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo, scheduled for tomorrow. Her path to recovery could be very long.

Berlin (AsiaNews / Agencies) - Liu Xia must stop the drug treatment prescribed in China. the exiled dissident and friend Liao Yiwu reports this, citing the German doctors who visited her yesterday.

Liu Xia, a 57-year-old female poet, has been placed under house arrest in Beijing without formal accusation since 2010, when her husband Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Liu Xiaobo died on July 13th, left to die by the Chinese authorities of liver cancer while he was in prison. The poet was released two days ago, allegedly thanks to the pressure from the German government of Angela Merkel. This was rejected by the Chinese government, which denies any diplomatic reading of the departure of Liu Xia.

The doctors are worried about the fragile health of the poet, who suffers from a severe depression. Liu Xia's conditions question her presence at the memorial for her husband's death, scheduled for tomorrow in the center of Berlin. The doctors themselves have advised the woman against public appearances that could overwhelm her.

Liao Yiwu, who has been with her since the first hours of her arrival, reports that her friend is "healthy in spirit, but weak in the body". "When we were going down for dinner - says Liao - Liu Xia almost fainted. Her emotions fluctuate a lot. She is a patient. The most important thing for us, her friends, is the next step [towards her healing] ". It is not easy for doctors to determine how long the recovery path will be.

Liao adds that Liu Xia was very happy to meet her friends. Tomorrow, the poet should meet Tienchi Martin-Liao, the president of the Chinese center based in Berlin "Pen", a position formerly held by her late husband Liu Xiaobo.
