Jerusalem: a young Palestinian killed amid fears of an escalation of violence

The boy, about 16 years old, was dragged into a black car in the eastern part of the city. A few hours later his corpse was found in a forest on the edge of the Eastern area. Local sources speak of "retaliation" for the kidnapping and murder of three young Israeli seminarians. Tension between Israel and Hamas, possible new attacks.

Jerusalem (AsiaNews / Agencies) - A Palestinian teenager of about 16, a native of East Jerusalem, was kidnapped and killed in the early hours of this morning in what many believe may have been a gesture of retaliation for the recent kidnapping and murder of three young Israelis. Local sources said that the victim was forcibly pushed into a black car, while he was in the eastern Arabic part of the city; His body was found several hours later in a wooded area of the city in East Jerusalem.

The Israeli police has opened an investigation but will not confirm the link between the two incidents of violence. The police spokeswoman Luba Samri reports that "in the early hours of Wednesday morning, police received a report of a person being forced into a car in Beit Hanina. Within an hour, a body was found in Jerusalem that has still not been identified. We are looking to see if there is a connection between the two incidents".

Upon hearing the news of the death of the boy, about 200 young Palestinians clashed with police in the street, throwing stones and rocks. In response, police used stun grenades and rubber bullets; the situation in the city remains very tense.

Meanwhile, thousands attended the funeral of the three teenagers from an Israeli rabbinical school, yesterday in Modein. The army has found the lifeless bodies of Eyal Yifrah (19) Gilad Shaar (16) and Naftali Fraenkel (16) near the village of Halhul on June 30. The three had been abducted June 12, near Hebron in the West Bank.

Their death has sparked the reaction of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has vowed to hunt down those responsible for the kidnapping and killing. He accused the radical Palestinian movement Hamas, which denies any involvement and ensures that "any Israeli offensive will open the gates of hell".

Local political experts emphasize the divisions within the executive on the next steps, with some ministers calling for a broad military action, while others warn of the possible escalation of violence. The military operations carried out so far by the army of Tel Aviv - focused on individuals linked to Hamas - has led to a wave of attacks with grenades and rockets into southern Israel by militants in the Gaza Strip.
