Nepali Hindus and Buddhists also celebrating Easter

by Christopher Sharma
Many activities are being organised in the mountain nation to celebrate the Christian holy day. A priest at Kathmandu Cathedral hopes "that all the inhabitants of the country can share the Easter message, and that Easter will soon become a festivity for all faiths and communities". Thousands of cards and e-messages are exchanged for the occasion.

Kathmandu (AsiaNews) - Christians but also many Hindus and Buddhists like to celebrate Easter by participating in a number of activities in the Himalayan nation.

For Bishnu Kasaju, a director with a Nepali telecom that provides services across the country, "Nepalis, regardless of their faith, exchange Easter greetings. During this time of the year, our centres register high traffic volumes and many messages have to remain on hold for a while."

"Our country," noted Jivan Karki, a Kathmandu Christian, "needs the Christian message of hope. Easter celebrations help us share the meaning of Jesus' presence, even among non-Christians."

"The Mass is a reminder of the resurrection of Jesus Christ," said Kishor Shretha, a young Catholic. "It can help spread His message." For this reason, "I have sent many messages and greeting cards to my family and friends."

A Protestant clergyman, Rev Ishu Karki, expressed his amazement at the rapid growth in the number of Nepalis bearing witness to the faith. He is hopeful that the Easter message can help people overcome their problems and suffering.

"I hope that all the inhabitants of the country can share the Easter message, and that Easter will soon become a festivity for all faiths and communities," said Fr Richard Rai, a priest at Kathmandu Cathedral.
