Pompeo: the United States does not want war with Iran. And neither does Tehran

Speaking in Russia, where he met Lavrov, the US secretary of state tries to dampen the winds of war in the Middle East. The goal is to force Tehran to behave like "a normal nation". Khamenei: "We are not looking for a war, nor are they". Iran has suspended part of its commitments provided for in the nuclear agreement.

Tehran (AsiaNews / Agencies) - Despite the growing tensions in the Middle East region, with the sending of warships and bombers to Gulf waters and mysterious naval incidents, the United States is not looking for a war with the 'Iran, according to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The diplomat is currently visiting to Russia, where he said that Washington's goal is to ensure that the Islamic Republic behaves like "a normal nation"; however, he did not rule out harsh responses in the case of attacks on interests or allies.

In the meeting between the US secretary of state and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Sochi, the distances between the White House and the Kremlin emerged once more. These are fueled by Russian support for the Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, the (alleged) Russian interference in view of the 2020 presidential elections and the Ukrainian dossier, with the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Yesterday, US President Donald Trump also tried to dampen the winds of war, denying a New York Times report that he is studying the dispatch of 120,000 troops to the Middle East in the event of an Iranian threat. "We have no plans in this regard," said Trump, who hoped he would not have to "examine this type of eventuality".

The attempt to dampen - at least in words - the bellicose tones of the United States has found strange convergence in the highest political and religious authorities in Iran: the supreme leader Ali Khamenei has affirmed that there will be no war with the Americans.

With a statement entrusted to his Twitter account, the great ayatollah stressed that he does not intend to renegotiate the nuclear agreement and then he adds that "we are not looking for a war, and neither are they".

In May 2018, US President Donald Trump pulled out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreed by his predecessor, Barack Obama, and imposed the toughest sanctions on Iran in history.

As noted by the International Monetary Fund, this decision has negatively impacted Iran’s economy, especially its oil exports, which was the goal of the second wave of sanctions that came into effect on 4 November 2018.

Still on the subject of nuclear power, in these hours Iran has officially suspended some commitments set by the 2015 agreement as anticipated last week to the nations still involved in the Jcpoa. According to an official Iranian source, for the future Tehran will not take into account the limits set by the plan for the production of enriched uranium and heavy water.
