Xi Jinping 'ready for anything', to annex Taiwan

The Chinese president warns the Democrats of Taipei and the United States: "The independence of the island will never occur. We reserve the right to use military force ". Trump signs a law that increases arms sales to the island, which Beijing considers a "rebel province".

Beijing (AsiaNews / Agencies) - China is "ready for anything" and therefore "reserves the right to use military force" as an option to fight the independence forces of Taiwan and get the reunification of the island with the homeland. This was underlined today by President Xi Jinping, who spoke on the occasion of the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the message sent to Taiwan in 1979, in which Beijing called for reunification and the end of military confrontation.

Xi clarified, China "must be reunified and it will be" and so "reserves the option of taking all necessary measures" against forces that interfere with peaceful reunification and against the independence and the separatist activities of Taiwan.

The reference is to the Democratic and Progressive Party of Taipei and the Republican wing of the American government, which recalls the existence of a law - the "Taiwan Defense Act" - which obliges the US to intervene in case of Chinese military aggression against the island. The friction with Washington has increased in recent days, when US President Trump signed a law that increases the sale of arms to Taipei.

The Beijing government does not give up considering Taiwan as part of its territory, although Taiwan and mainland China have been separated since 1949, when the Chinese civil war ended and the communists came to power. The Chinese authorities consider the island as one of its provinces and call for a "reunification" of the two sides of the Strait. Taiwan considers itself a sovereign state with its own currency and autonomous political and judicial systems, but never formally declared independence.
