Father Camillo Ripamonti, director of the historical reception center run by the Jesuits, speaks to AsiaNews about the situation of refugees and the prospects that the Church and society can offer. A welcome "is important but not enough. Integration is the key word, and the bureaucracy is not helping". Pope Francis’ appeal to parishes "takes time and planning, but it can change things." However, "it will be useless if we do not act on the causes of migration, primarily on the conflicts in the Middle East."

Egyptian Coptic refugee finds comfort in pope's words after enduring pain in Minya
George and his family owned a supermarket. On 10 August, Islamists blew up the business and threatened to kill him and his loved ones. After his escape, he spent the past month in Rome, waiting for his application for political asylum to be accepted by Italian authorities. In Egypt, "there is no place for me," he said. "I can no longer live there. The Egyptian Revolution is not democratic." For Christians, "Life has never been easy. No one has helped us."

The Chaldean archbishop of Kirkuk, in Milan to receive the Defensor Fidei prize, asks for increased efforts to help the Christian communities stay in Iraq. Political and diplomatic pressure must be applied to the United States, and to countries that foster Islamisation. But "signs of hope" are also needed: schools, farming and commercial projects to increase employment.
