Bangkok: award for woman committed to health care in the Maldives

Aminath Jameel, a nurse who is Minister of Health in the Maldives, received the Princess Srinakarindra award for her work helping the spread of healthcare to the most remote and isolated islands.
Bangkok (AsiaNews) - The Royal Princess Maha Chadri Sirindhorn presided over the ceremony of the Princess Srinakarindra award to Dr. Aminath Jameel, Minister of Health of the Maldives, in the throne room of the Grand Palace. The prize was founded October 21, 2000 to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the princess at the initiative of the Mahidol University Faculty of Medicine. The award is given annually to a woman who works in health care for the results obtained at national or international levels. The winner receives a prize of 10 thousand dollars.

Aminath Jameel, after having graduated from La Trobe University, began working to bring knowledge of health care to the most isolated and remote areas of the Maldives. She then launched a program for nurses and midwives in the islands, in order to avoid the need to go abroad to acquire these skills. Among other things, she translated health care texts into local language, so that they can become part of common practise. She was also president of the nurses in the Maldives, and later was called to become responsible for the health of the country.

During the ceremony the Princess Sirindhorn said: "The elements to create a healthy society dwell in organizing and administering a policy with efficiency so that the people can have access to health resources, and staff the necessary knowledge. The model of Dr. Jameel is a good model for all nurses, who should follow her example”. Aminath Jameel said that she had "an inspiration, to pave the way in local health care in Maldives, travelling from island to island to learn the local context of each place, and that's what the country needs."
