Bangladesh, the Catholic students movement marks 25 years

by Sumon Corraya

The organization was founded in 1991 to bring young people and bishops together. Students receive formation and are involved in social and charitable activities. As adults, they come to occupy senior posts, because in the movement "they learn to express themselves and to take on responsibility".

Dhaka (AsiaNews) - About 250 members of the Bangladesh Catholic Students Movement (BCSM) celebrated the 25th anniversary of their organization. Cardinal designate Patrick D'Rozario  was present at the celebrations and said: "The exponents of this student movement are doing a great job for the Catholic Church, its leaders carry on our work. We thank them sincerely. "

The festivities were held on October 13 and 14 last in Dhaka Centre. Addressing the young people, Archbishop George Kocherry, Apostolic Nuncio of Bangladesh, said: "You have to use your talents for the good of man. We know that young people know how to do many good things, if they want it. So you have to take the initiative and work for mercy in service. "

The student organization is a lay movement. It was born in 1991 to promote the Christian lifestyle and motivate young people to support moral values. It is part of the International Movement of Catholic Students (IMCS) and is a member of the Bishops' Conference of Bangladesh (CBCB).

Sebastian Rozario, former Secretary of the movement and current assistant executive director of Caritas Bangladesh, noted that the association "was born 25 years ago to bridge the gap between bishops and youth, introduce students to the Catholic Church, in order to create a more collaborative relationship".

William Nokrek, president of the BCSM, told AsiaNews that the movement "aims to promote the values and Christian ideals, develop the personality of college students, particularly in the social sphere, education and culture. We want between increases students' awareness of their responsibilities towards the Church and the nation. "

Today the Movement is committed to the formation of its members and in different social and charitable activities such as blood donation, distribution of clothes to the poor, visiting hospitals and slums.

The organization's leaders point out that many of those who have been part of the BCSM in their youth, in adulthood go on to occupy prominent positions in various fields. This is because, concludes Sebastian Rozario, "Here they learn to express themselves, to present themselves. The education they receive helps them to enter the professional life ".
