Custos of the Holy Land: No contact about Fr Aziz, a Franciscan abducted just before Christmas
Uncertain whether “he is still alive,” Fr Pizzaballa tells AsiaNews that he does not know who is behind the abduction. The clergyman went missing in an area “of heavy fighting,” where “Many groups are active” on their own, so “it is difficult to understand who did it”. Forgiveness and mercy are needed to save the region from a “spiral of hatred, resentment, and revenge”.

For Mgr Pizzaballa, the notion of citizenship is key to a new model of coexistence in the Middle East
Just over a year after his appointment, the apostolic administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem looks back at his work. Many issues remain unresolved, from the major shift ongoing in the region to the principle of unity and closeness with its people. The positive elements include collaboration with the local clergy and the welcoming attitude of locals. Still, there is still a lot to do.

For Jerusalem Churches, restoration of the aedicule of the Holy Sepulchre is symbol of brotherhood and co-operation
An ecumenical ceremony marked the reopening of the aedicule. Representatives of the Franciscan community, Greek Orthodox and Armenian Churches spoke at the event. Mgr Pizzaballa also spoke. Pope Francis donated money for the restoration of the Holy Sepulchre and the basilica in Bethlehem. Bartholomew I, Patriarch of Constantinople, expressed his gratitude.

Joint Israeli-Vatican commission makes no real progress
Commission member Monsignor Vegliò and Custodian of the Holy Land Father Pizzaballa share this view. Both discuss the situation of Christians in the Holy Land, stressing the different situations they live depending on whether they live in Israel or the Palestinian Territories. Father Lombardi reiterates that “conditions for a papal visit [. . .] are not yet in place.”

Apostolic Vicar of Aleppo is optimistic about Fr Hanna, who continues his mission among Syrian Christians
Mgr Georges Abou Khazen is in contact with the Franciscan friar who was kidnapped and released in the north of the country. The latter is free to visit his community but "cannot leave Syria" before meeting with local Muslim leader. The reasons for his abduction and for the meeting remain a mystery. For moderate Muslims, Christians "are a source of dialogue and reconciliation in an absurd war."

For the Custody of the Holy Land, Nusra Front might be holding priest seized in Syria
Fr Dhiya Azziz, a Franciscan born in Mosul, Iraq, is missing. No contacts have been possible with him since last Saturday. According to the Custody, “Some militants of an unknown armed brigade, perhaps connected with Jabhat al-Nusra,” took him. His name now goes on the list of missing clergymen, including two bishops and Fr Paolo Dall'Oglio.
