Death of Gaddafi: the new government under fire. NATO absolves itself

Videos reveal that the Rais was lynched and executed. Today the autopsy, as hundreds visit the morgue where his body is kept. Gaddafi’s tribe request the body for burial according to the canons of Islam. But the transitional government is undecided whether to get rid of the body or bury it in a secret place. NATO: Gaddafi's death was never our goal. Criticism of Russia.
Measured (AsiaNews / Agencies) - The Libyan authorities of the transitional government are under pressure to give a detailed account on how the former leader Muammar Gaddafi died. For its part, NATO says the death of Nasser was never the goal and that it will end its operations within the month. Meanwhile, tribe request the body for burial.

Yesterday the UN and the wife of the late Colonel, requested an investigation, the U.S. also demand an "open and transparent" account.

Today an autopsy will be carried out on the corpse of Gaddafi to establish the causes of his death. But various videos distributed on the Internet show that the Rais, who was captured in Sirte, being beaten, dragged by the hair, wounded and then killed.

One video shows a stunned Gaddafi with a head wound after a fight with the rebels. At the beginning you can see him without injury, however, surrounded by armed men. Later, the blood flows from the left side of his head as he is aided and escorted to a van. At one point a voice shouts in Arabic: "Do not shoot! Do not shoot. " Finally there is the bloodied and bowed face of the rais (see here and here).

The videos contradict the official government version, that Gaddafi was killed in a crossfire between the rebels and his bodyguards. His death seems to be the result of a summary execution.

The way in which the former Libyan leader was humiliated and killed is against all international laws. It is also offensive to the tribe of Gaddafi, the Al-Gaddadfa, who have now demanded the corpse for burial.

"We ask the UN – reads a statement - the Organisation of Islamic Conference and Amnesty International to push the transitional national government to hand over the bodies of the martyrs of our tribe of Sirte and allow us to perform the burial ceremony according to the customs and laws of Islam. "

The body of Gaddafi and his son Mutassim lie in the cold room of a butcher in Misurata. Hundreds of people flock to see with the bodies with their own eyes, taking pictures with mobile phones. The government is delaying the burial - which according to Islamic canons should take place as soon as possible - waiting for the autopsy and to decide what to do with the body. Fearing that the tomb of the late rais could become a kind of sanctuary or provoke riots, the transitional government plans to bury him in Misurata - the site of a rival tribe - or even throw the body into the sea, as with Osama Bin Laden.

For its part, NATO, in the words of its secretary general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, said that "the killing of Gaddafi has never been" the goal. According to some accounts of the capture of the rais, NATO aircraft fired on the convoy in which Gaddafi fled. But Sergei Lavrov, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs states that "the way in which his [Gaddafi's] death came about raises a huge number of questions."

Russia, China and other states, have criticized the way since last March onwards NATO has used the UN mandate to protect Libyan civilians from Gaddafi reprisals. According to Russia, "civil protection" has become a way to implement a regime change. During these months, the NATO bombing were often directed against Gaddafi's palace, the Bab al-Azizia, to reduce it to dust.

Rasmussen said that the NATO mission in Libya will end on October 31 and asked the caretaker government to "respect human rights in full transparency."
