Kathmandu(AsiaNews /Agencies) -TheNepalesesherpas"cleaned" the Mount Everesttocelebratethe 58years since thefirstascentto theroof of the world. OnMay 29, 29climbershelpedby65carriersand 75yakshavetransporteddownstreamover8tons ofwaste, abandonedby touristsduring thetreks.
Amongthepiecesofwaste there wasalsohelicopter’s parts, bottlesand cans thathave been trappediniceforover50 years. Thenon-recyclable materialswill be turnedintogamesand souvenirsby local people.
The projectcalled"Saving MountEverest, Waste ManagementProject, 2011, was organizedby theEverestSummiteersAssociation(ESA), EcoHimal, the Ministryof Tourismandcivil aviation.
Since 1953, more than3,500climbershavereached the summitofMountEverest. Mostexpeditionhave lefttrailsof waste. According toexpertson theroutethere arestillmore than50tonsofgarbage.
